Antoinette E. ‘Toni’ Steinberg Saladna, 86, of Belle Vernon, Rostraver Twp., passed away Monday, October 21, 2024, at UPMC Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. Born May 21, 1938, in Pontiac, MI she was the daughter of the late Anthony J. and Mary E. Sadowski Steinberg. A lifelong resident of Belle Vernon, Mrs. Saladna was a member of St. Sebastian R.C. Church.
Toni graduated from Bellmar High School, Class of '55, and Penn State University, where she met her husband, Gene. She was married to Eugene F. Saladna, for almost 60 years. Toni would celebrate her love of the Nittany Lions with her husband at many football games.
You may have known Toni from the family business her parents started: Steinberg's Supermarket in Fairhope. She and her family catered many gatherings & graduation parties. As a business owner, she was dedicated to treating all of her customers, every member of the community, with dignity and respect. Toni, her sister, Gloria, and her parents created a welcoming environment for all, and proudly gave so many local kids their first job. Long after retiring, she still heard from many of them and loved knowing where life took them. Later, Toni also worked for PNC Bank for many years.
Toni was incredibly creative. She majored in Art at Penn State and her family grew up surrounded by her paintings. But she was just as talented and passionate at everything from interior design to making Halloween costumes with her kids.
Toni loved to read and shared her love of reading and writing with her kids. She could also cook up a storm and made sure they picked up those skills and her recipes, as well.
Family was everything to Toni. She loved spending time with her four kids and grandson Sam. She vacationed every summer with her family in Ocean City, NJ, where she savored a slice of Mack & Manco pizza, a boardwalk macaroon, and a good mystery novel. She loved to laugh, and her kids loved to try to crack her up! And she always got the joke. Toni loved crossword puzzles and game nights-- and she was game for anything; she was just so much fun.
She is survived by her four children: Gloria Gene 'Gigi' Saladna, Mary Saladna Shipman, Antoinette J. Saladna, Eugene A. Saladna, two sons-in-law, Edward Shipman, James Grossman, grandson Samuel Eugene Shipman, sister Gloria Tracey, sister-in-law Barbara Madison, and cherished nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Eugene F. Saladna.
Private family visitation was held Friday, October 25, followed by funeral mass at St. Sebastian R.C. Church, Belle Vernon, with Msgr. James Gaston as celebrant. Interment took place in Belle Vernon Cemetery. Toni’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Parzynski Funeral Home & Cremations LLC, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon 724-929-6183.
