Edward Ronald Coates

Edward Ronald “Ron” Coates, 82, of Meridian, Idaho, formerly of Belle Vernon and Greenville, Pennsylvania, passed away Friday, January 24, 2025, at home. Born April 20, 1942, in N. Charleroi, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Stanley and Lena Coates. A resident of Meridian for the past 5 years, Mr. Coates was a former member of Holy Spirit Parish Church in Fayette City and of St. Michael’s Church in Greenville. 

Mr. Coates was recruited from Bellmar High School to attend Pennsylvania State University on a football scholarship where he played both quarterback and kicker, then graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1964. He was a longtime board member of Greenville Savings Bank and retired from his career as a coal broker in 2019. Mr. Coates remained a lifelong Penn State football fan, holding season tickets at Beaver Stadium for decades. In addition to golfing and being outside on summer days, he loved vacationing and visiting with family and friends year-round. Most of all he enjoyed putting smiles on people's faces.

Mr. Coates is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Joyce Baron Coates. He is also survived by three daughters, Robin & husband Robert Haney of Elk Grove, CA, Lynne Coates & husband Jeff Rickard of Grass Valley, CA, and Christine Coates & husband Kory Voxen of Eagle, ID; four grandchildren Jill & husband James de Bree, Ed Haney, Ryan Rickard, and Zac Coates; and one great-grandson, Tommy de Bree. He is preceded in death by his sister, Jeanne Lazzari.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Parzynski Funeral Home & Cremations LLC, Family Owned and Operated, 626 Broad Avenue, Belle Vernon 724-929-6183. Prayers of Transfer will be held Friday at 11 AM in the funeral home followed by funeral mass at 11:30 AM in St. Sebastian R.C. Church.  Interment will take place in Belle Vernon Cemetery.
